Update (August 29, 2017 at 1:12 p.m.): Melania Trump changed en route into more sensible footwear and . . . a personalized baseball cap to match her husband’s. It says, “FLOTUS.” Unlike her husband’s hat, it is not yet available for sale at the Trump-Pence campaign website.

A curious photo was taken outside the White House Tuesday morning, as Donald Trump and Melania Trump boarded a flight to Texas, where they were to be briefed on the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in nearby Houston. The President‘s clothes—khakis, windbreaker, and sturdy shoes—say, “I know what’s going on, at least.” And then there’s Melania. Her aviator sunglasses and army green jacket say, “Business,” and, “Let’s get down to business,” and, “Hello, my name is Tom Cruise and I’m here to give you the business.” The heels scream, “Who’s in for brunch?”

This is an unprecedented moment. Hurricane Harvey has inundated the Houston area with 30 inches or more of rain fall in some areas. Texas Governor Greg Abbott called “one of the largest disasters America has ever faced.” Thousands have lost all they have. At least ten have lost their lives. It’s times like these that what a politicians or their entourage wears matters the least, but ironically, when it matters the most. Just think of George W. Bush in the instantly iconic “Mission Accomplished” flight suit, or the fact that something called “tanghazi” emerged when Barack Obama wore a tan suit to a White House press briefing. The optics of leadership has not been this administration’s strong suit, despite the self-proclaimed marketing genius at its helm.

To be fair, did Melania have any other option? She’s rarely seen in flats. Have we confirmed whether or not her foot is part stiletto? That sometime in the early aughts, exhausted by the whole putting shoes on and taking shoes off rigmarole, she just installed a five-inch steal rod in her heel? Can someone check, please?

Regardless, with Melania having taken a style cue from Michelle Obama just days ago, now is an auspicious time for the First Lady to find even more inspiration in her predecessor. When asked about the $540 Lanvin sneakers she wore to a food bank early in her tenure, Michelle replied simply, “They’re shoes.”
