Why Miley Cyrus Is Our Unexpected Style Icon

We know there's a lot of skin on show - and some frankly weird tongue action - but Miley's got some hidden Bangerz in her style roster.

MILEY-MAIN

Oh, Miley. We may have grown a bit bored with your getting-to-be-predictable outbreaks of twerking, tongue twizzling and home-grown self-inflicted wedgies. But that doesn't mean you don't have some hidden sartorial goodness. Don't believe us? Here's your Need To Know on Miley as this week's Unexpected Style Icon.

Go on then, why Miley?

We hear you, weary of tone. Don't let woeful over-exposure (in every sense of the word) make you ignore the fact that Miley has a supremely convetable collection of 90s Moschino, vintage Levi's and Chanel luggage. Showcasing what her mum gave her to the very best of her ability is something Miley excels at; but we've actually become so diverted by her supercool crop tops and statement coats, that the skin exposure almost passes us right by.

Who else is into it?

Jeremy Scott for Moschinoscreams Miley and Marc Jacobs' is also a massive fan - check her out in his SS14 campaign. Richard Nicoll has tons of Miley-on-stage style sheer for SS14, whilst Shrimps has lots of Miley-friendly faux fur coloured coats. Oh and the crop tops and high waisted 'mom' or 'girlfriend' jeans? They've everywhere this summer. Miley tastic.

But how would I do it in real life?

It's all about breaking down the elements: head-to-toe Miley isn't going to work IRL. Firstly, let's take the bustier. Who knew it was so wearable, in an unassuming nude hue? Pair it with a printed skirt, either flared or midi (opt for a longer length the smarter you want the look to be) and you've got a very 'Harley Viera-Newton DJing for Dior' get up.

Leather bustier, £69.99 H&M (available from the Conscious Exclusive Collection), Python Print Jacquard Skirt, £575 Stella McCartney at Selfridges, Cut-Out Suede Sandals, £535 Aquazzura at Net-a-Porter.

Secondly, we should hardly have to persuade you about the teddy bear coat. This one from H&M is soft and inexpensive and is 'statement' enough to wear with just a pair of skinny black leather trousers and a t-shirt.

Teddy Bear Coat, £59.99, H&M, Leather Trousers, £245 & Other Stories, Tie-Dyed Tissue Jersey Long-Sleeved Top, £170 Proenza Schouler at Opening Ceremony.

Thirdly, let us just establish something right now: this tassled, studded micro mini is not going to be suitable for 95% of your life. So don't even bother. But where it does come into its own is at a festival. Pair it with a muscle tee and some retro sneaks and you've got an anti-festi festi look, right there. Forget embellished crop tops and Hunter wellies, this is casual with a hint of 'stage presence' at its best.

Mini Skirt, £49.99 H&M (available from the Conscious Exclusive Collection), Shell Jersey Tank, £100 James Perse at Matches Fashion, Superstar 2 Shoes, £62 Adidas.

So, should I do it?

Look, I don't want to send any of you out into the world dressed as showgirls with a penchant for flashing - and we're certainly not saying any of you should do this or wear this. But who wouldn't want a bit of Miley-style funtimes in their lives? Her childhood nickname isn't Smiley for nothing.
