4 Steps to Apply Mascara Perfectly, Every Time

Mascara can transform anyone's eyes but it's important for fair-skinned ladies with short, light lashes to apply it subtly—too much can appear like a solid, goopy wall. Sarah (Redbook's own executive editor!) agrees: "My pale lashes are hard to see, so I like mascara, but some formulas make my lashes look jarring against my pale skin," she told me. I showed her how using a little eyeshadow first can soften up the whole effect so your eyes just seem bigger, brighter, and naturally pretty.

Curl Your Lashes
Clamp a curler at the roots of your lashes, again in the middle, then once more near the tips. This forms a rounded shape that makes lashes seem longer and fuller.
Create a Base
A bit of eyeshadow will minimize the contrast between the dark mascara and your skin. Sweep a warm beige color that's a shade or two deeper than your skin tone on your lids.
Put On Mascara
A lengthening formula in a black-brown shade will give your lashes just enough definition without being too dark. Place the wand at the base of your lashes, give it a wiggle, then swipe it through the ends.
Clean It Up
Comb through your lashes once or twice with a spooley brush to remove any clumps and fan out the hairs. This also gives your lashes a smooth finish— like your own, but with a boost.
